PADIMA

Policies Against Depopulation In Mountain Areas

PADIMA (Policies Against Depopulation In Mountain Areas) aims to identify solutions to tackle depopulation in Europe’s mountain areas.

To this end, PADIMA built on interregional cooperation, surveys, and good practices exchange on depopulation drivers and inspiring initiatives. The project focused on three specific subtopics: education and training, territorial marketing and economic diversification. Moreover, seeking for an integrated approach of depopulation, PADIMA looked at solutions to retain or attract people of different age groups, including young people, workers and retired people.

The partnership consists of 8 partners from mountain areas in Europe. The Province of Teruel was Lead Partner and Euromontana was the project coordinator. Six Euromontana members are part of the consortium: Province of Teruel, Province of Turin, Buskerud County, Hedmark County, ERSAF and UCCIMAC.

Impact

Through interregional cooperation and exchange of good practices, PADIMA has contributed to improving knowledge of depopulation trends and drivers in mountain areas. The project has helped to build an integrated approach of depopulation by addressing the quality of life challenges of different age groups, thus taking into account people’s life cycles and designing more targeted and efficient policies.

PADIMA also contributed to identify good practices that can inspire other mountain areas willing to prevent depopulation in their regions, by acting for education, territorial marketing and economic diversification.

Thanks to the project’s integrated approach of depopulation, PADIMA helped to find common solutions and policy initiatives that can be adapted to each territory, according to the demographic trends and opportunities identified in each mountain territory.
