GI-SMART

Geographical Indications’ contribution to smart territorial development and sustainability. Insights for GIs producers, policy makers, consumers and local communities.

GI SMART (Geographical Indications’ contribution to smart territorial development and sustainability. Insights for GIs producers, policy makers, consumers and local communities) is a 4-year research project that will provide evidence-based recommendations to strengthen the contribution of geographical indications (GIs) to sustainable territorial development and the objectives of the EU Farm to Fork strategy.

To achieve this, GI SMART will develop tools and methodologies to foster the implementation of sustainability strategies by GIs producers, ensure their recognition by consumers, and formulate policy recommendations for a better design of GI policies.

GI SMART brings together 17 partners from 10 European countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United Kingdom and Switzerland), covering cover the vast majority of the >3000 GIs registered in Europe, with France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Germany representing 82% of all GIs in Europe. Euromontana leads the activities relevant to communication and dissemination, and will contribute to the development of strategic guides for practitioners and policymakers to help them improve sustainability of GI schemes and production systems.

Expected impact

Over the next few years, GI SMART aims to improve the understanding of how Geographical Indication (GI) schemes support sustainable development and the goals of the Farm to Fork strategy. Through the GI SMART Community Platform (both at EU and national levels), the project will involve diverse stakeholders, creating a space for participatory dialogue and engaging them in the co-creation and validation of research results to ultimately foster the adoption and promotion of GI schemes.

GI SMART will also ensure that these schemes are recognized and understood by consumers. As a result, the project will produce strategic guides to support the design and implementation of better and smarter policies for sustainable agriculture and fisheries, healthy diets, and sustainable food systems.
