The X European Mountain Convention was organised on 3, 4 & 5 October 2016 in Bragança, Portugal. Entitled “Mountains’ vulnerability to climate change: how can people and territories adapt and mitigate its effects?”, this edition was organised in collaboration with the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança’s Mountain Research Center.

The direct effects of climate change are becoming increasingly visible. Due to their natural handicaps, mountains are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Mountain areas have difficult climatic and environmental conditions, but mountain people are used to adapting to them. Thanks to their great experience in innovation and adaptation, they have already started to face the challenge of climate change. This X European Mountain Convention will present the state of the art in mountain areas and how experience and technical knowledge have been used to provide solutions for adaptation and mitigation of climate change. The focus will be on solutions not only at the policy level, but also at the practitioner level, in different sectors such as agriculture, energy, water, transport and tourism.

In parallel, and for the first time, the International Conference on Research for Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions will be held. The two events, EMC and ICRSDMR, will be combined under the name Mountains 2016. In addition, the X European Mountain Convention marked the 20th anniversary of Euromontana.
